Happy Sunday!
Firstly, a big welcome to those who subscribed after my friend/competitor Giuseppe recommended Fair Warning in his newsletter Quantum of Sollazzo (which you should take a look at/subscribe if you don’t already). I hope he didn’t oversell it and that you enjoy reading!
I’m writing this far earlier than I normally do so it’ll be a little shorter, because I am in New York for a while! And some advance notice: there won’t be a Fair Warning edition on 18th August.
Usually I break up the newsletter with sections but since there are half as many links as normal I’m just going to put them all here. Normal service will resume in September…
This is depressing and useful in equal measure, I think. I’m looking at renting in London, and it’s just eye-wateringly expensive… Although what it doesn’t tell you is about housing that’s outside the postcode of the stations. And knowing London, those different postcodes could be a two minute walk away, or a twenty minute walk away.
US voters press Congress candidates to fix housing crisis
This looks at rental prices in major metro areas across the states, stating that voters “rated the scarcity and cost of housing as their second-most important economic worry”. One caveat is this was published before Kamala Harris took over as the Democratic presidential candidate, I don’t know if that might make a difference to people’s attitudes and who they want to vote for.
One for the Tolkien nerds out there. Don’t get me wrong, I watched and enjoyed the films but I found the books really hard-going—I personally don’t need to know the ancestry of every single character going back two centuries but I understand the detail is part of the appeal and I do love a good map. You’ll really enjoy this website.
If you’ve ever seen the Netflix show Dark, then you’ll probably know that it is incredible but also hella confusing. One Forbes writer even said it’s the “most mentally exhausting show I’ve ever seen”. This visualisation is an attempt at explaining the show. I love the design concept but a) I think the colour scheme is a bit confusing and b) I would really appreciate an interactive version so I could go through the characters/timelines I’m interested in.
Persons of the Forest: Sumatra’s Endangered and Trafficked Orangutans
This is from 2021 but new to me, and it’s a beautifully-told story about orangutans in Sumatra and how they face threats from deforestation and being killed by humans. It’s not all doom and gloom though: while the story does open your eyes to their mistreatment it does also offer some hope for their future.
That’s everything I have for this week! Thank you for reading. If you enjoyed Fair Warning, please forward to friends and tell them how great it is. If you REALLY liked it, you can buy me a coffee. And as always, you can get in touch with me on X at @SophWarnes or by replying to this email. You’re also welcome to submit things to me, and while I can’t promise to feature them, I do promise I will take a look.
I might give Dark a second go with that...
